ENERGUIDE for New Homes

Program Facts:
  • Rating system developed by the office of NRCAN in cooperation with CMHC that helps provide home owners with recommendations on energy-efficient home improvements. Helps to determine where a home has heat loss and air leaks Provides you an energy rating between 1-100. The rating of 50 represents extreme heat loss and 82 and higher being a very energy efficient home.
  • New homes built to Ontario Building Code standards have an average rating of 68. New homes built with energy efficiency in mind typically range from 72-82. Each point can reduce home utility bills.

Evaluation includes:
  • A blower door test, which identifies air leakage
  • An ENERGUIDE for New Homes report
  • Estimate of annual energy consumption along with an ENERGUIDE for New Homes label.

Financial Help:
Canada Mortgage and Housing (CMHC) offers a 10% refund on its mortgage loan insurance premium when a borrower buys or builds an energy efficient home. To qualify for this refund, the home's energy efficiency must meet certain minimum requirements. Visit CMHC's webstie at www.cmhc.ca or call

Builder Process:
  • The builder contacts a service organization (www.enerquality.ca) to attend a builder workshop. Builder then registers with NRCAN and enrolls the homes with Enerquality.
  • Builder contacts third party evaluators such as ourselves to create a builder option package to ensure the technical specification are being met and in the most cost effective way.
  • As builders complete construction the evaluator performs pre-drywall inspections. When the house is completed the house is air tested and inspected for final requirements. House is labeled and homeowner received certification package



GREENHOUSE by Enerquality










R2000
Program Facts:
  • Developed by the office of natural resources Canada
  • Building practices are superior to traditional construction methods from blueprint to completion of project
  • Widely researched, and tested standard that gets reviewed by NRCAN regularly Held to strict technical requirements for energy efficiency, IAQ and environmental responsibility
  • Only R2000 licensed builders can build R2000 homes
  • Has to have a whole-house ventilation system, water conserving toilets, facustes, shower heads, quality heating system, green building materials, tighter envelope and much more R-2000 homes are 30% less energy than a standard new home built to OBC

Builder Process:
  • Builder to complete workshop with a service organization (www.enerquality.ca)
  • Enerquality to assist builder in registering with NRCAN

  • Licensed R-2000 evaluator hired to analyze the home's design by using Hot2000 software program
  • After the design approval construction begins. Evaluator will visit and make sure construction is in agreement to the R2000 program standards.
  • When home is completed evaluator will do a final inspection and blower door test for air leakage
  • Paperwork and files will be submitted to service organization who in return will certifiy the home. Homeowners will receive an R2000 final certification and label for the home.



LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Program Facts:
  • Internationally known benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings
  • Reputation to being the highest quality certification for green building
  • Certification process that looks at various aspects of green building including waste process

  • Award recognition to buildings and homes that meet certain standards
  • Overseen by Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) – non profit organization

  • Lower energy bills and operating costs for buildings

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

  • Less exposure to mold and mildew and other indoor contaminants



Builder Process:
  • Project registration - at this stage the applicant will establish a contact with the CaGBC and will provide you with resource tools to kick start the project.
  • Once registered, project team begins to prepare documents and calculations. It is highly recommended to hire an accredited professional
  • To earn certification a project must satisfy all prerequisites and minimum number of points to get a LEED rating
